Today, BWSS observes International Day of the Girl, a day dedicated to amplifying the voices of girls worldwide and advocating for their empowerment and safety. This year, we emphasize the urgent issue of dating violence among youth, especially girls, who face unique challenges in relationships that impact their emotional and physical well-being. It is crucial that we address these harmful dynamics early, helping young girls recognize and reject abusive behaviours.

At BWSS, we are committed to supporting youth through our YOUth Ending Violence program, offering resources, advocacy, and education to empower them to navigate healthy relationships. As we mark International Day of the Girl, we call on communities, institutions, and policymakers to strengthen protections for girls and create safe spaces for support and justice. Together, we can support girls build a future free from violence.

Here are some facts about dating violence in youth relationships from Statistics Canada:

45% of teens (aged 15-17)
have experienced
dating violence.
Emotional abuse is the most common form
of dating violence among youth.
Police-reported dating violence rates among teens (aged 15-17)
have increased by 33% since 2015, primarily due to a rise
in the reporting of sexual offences within teen dating relationships.
The rate of police-reported dating violence
was nine times higher for girls (500 per 100,000)
compared to boys (57 per 100,000).
As an organization dedicated to ending violence in all its forms, BWSS stands in solidarity with victims and survivors. For resources on safety, accessing support, and taking action against gender-based violence, visit our website.
