Toxic Relationships vs. Abusive Relationships

Did you know that most calls to the BWSS Crisis Line aren’t about leaving an abusive partner? Many individuals reach out to develop a plan, understand the dynamics of the abuse, and discuss their relationship. Leaving is often not the primary focus of these calls.

Our crisis line serves more than just those seeking a safe escape from violence. Our trained and supervised team is ready to provide emotional support, information and resources to a diverse range of individuals navigating abusive relationships. This includes people who are concerned about their friend, family member, co-worker or neighbour.

Whether someone is in a relationship that feels troubling but is unsure if it qualifies as abuse, or is concerned about someone else who might be in an abusive situation, calling the crisis line can help find the answers they need.

The crisis line is a resource for discussing safety planning, legal issues, family law, the role of the police, child custody, and immigration issues. Callers can also talk about specific incidents, access information about crisis lines and transition house services, and receive support whether they are in Canada, the US, or internationally.

Beyond immediate crisis support, our team provides ongoing assistance to help individuals navigate the complex emotional and logistical challenges that often accompany situations of abuse. We are dedicated to offering not only immediate help but also long term and referrals to specialized services, including referrals to housing, counselling, support groups and legal aid.

BWSS offers immediate, short-term support to survivors of intimate partner violence, childhood sexual abuse, and adult sexual assault. For those seeking support, whether for themselves or a loved one, they can call the crisis line at 604-687-1867 or toll-free at 1-855-687-1868. Remember, reaching out is a crucial step in finding support and resources tailored unique situations.

As an organization dedicated to ending violence in all its forms, BWSS stands in solidarity with victims and survivors. For resources on safety, accessing support, and taking action against gender-based violence, visit our website.
